Over the last few months, we have become far more accustomed to a self-led whisky tasting boxes. We feel they offer a great level of flexibility, and with helpful notes cards a standard part of The Dram Team subscription it’s not difficult to learn something new.

Tasting Notes

Provenance, Teaninich 8 y/o – 46%

Nose: sweet, oak biscuits, honey, orchard fruits, grape juice
Palate: crisp apples, very fresh – like spring, new oak, green citrus
Finish: clean and light with lots of citrus notes

Very pale in colour, you are immediately hit with the orchard fruits and honey on the nose. A crisp, refreshing dram – perfect for a warm sunny Spring afternoon.

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Glengoyne 10 y/o – 40%

Nose: orchard fruits, nutty, toffee, honeycomb, quite cereally, sour green apples
Palate: SO SMOOTH, light oak wood, honey, brown sugar
Finish: sweetness from chocolate covered raisins, malty, long-lasting,

Another Highland dram, this offered a great depth of flavour for a ten year old whisky. A great sipping dram, with a nice nutty undertone.

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Scallywag, The Chocolate Edition – 48%

Nose: chocolate, orange oil, cherries dried red fruits, Christmas cake, nuts, nutmeg
Palate: chocolate dipped stem ginger, creamy chocolate cinnamon, fruit and nut chocolate
Finish: Chocolate dipped stem ginger

This whisky is incredibly YUMMY. With only 3,000 bottles produced we’ve got our eyes peeled to see if we can find one. Amazingly sweet, smooth, and decadent – a perfect after-dinner whisky.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Malt Riot, Glasgow Vat No.6 – 40%

Nose: light salinity, blossom, vanilla, oak
Palate: apples, toffee, popcorn, vanilla slices
Finish: caramelised sugar and grilled pineapple

I’ve got to be honest, this whisky split us. The other half of The Dram Duo was quite a big fan, unfortunately there was a note that just didn’t get on well with my palate. The wonders of whisky – there is something for everyone!

Rating: 1 out of 5.

Elements of Islay – 48%

Nose: BBQ fruits, sea air, smoked grass, orange oil, smoked meats
Palate: sweet BBQ smoke, dark chocolate, salted caramel
Finish: more smoke,, grilled fruits, ginger spice and a hint of background saltiness.

Without a doubt this was my favourite whisky in this box! It’s no surprise given my love for peated Islay whisky, but there was just something so special about the BBQ some in this dram.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

We forgot to take notes on the smaller 10ml sample this time – WHOOPS – so will make a special effort to remember it for next month!

Final Thoughts

Another fantastic box from The Dram Team. We know that we’re big Scotch drinkers in this house-hold, but that doesn’t stop it being a great thing went we try new drams. The Scallywag, The Chocolate Edition really is something special!
