Whisky Review – Fettercairn 7 Year Old 2009 – Strictly Limited, Càrn Mòr

As we quickly move through the Spring months we’re begining to dream about Summer BBQs and thinking of the best whisky pairings! This Fettercairn 7 y/o 2009 from the Strictly Limited Càrn Mòr range definitely evokes thoughts of warm Summer evenings.

Fettercairn Whisky …

Founded in 1824 by Sir Alexander Ramsay – a key campaigner for the licensing of Scotch Whisky distillation – Fettercain originally hired illegal whisky makers. This tradition of being just a little bit different has carried on throughout the life of the distillery. In 1950 they introduced a cooling ring to continually douse the stills in water; increasing the internal condensation, ensuring only the lightest vapours rise for collection.

Càrn Mòr, Strictly Limited …

The Càrn Mòr Strictly Limited range comes from the Family-owned Independent Bottlers, Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers (formerly Morrison and Mackay). The Strictly Limited range is a collection from some of the finest distilleries in Scotland, presented in non-chill filtered and natural colour.

Tasting Notes …

Fettercairn 7 Year Old 2009, Strictly Limited, Càrn Mòr – 46% ABV

This 7 year old Fettercairn single malt Scotch whisky, drawn from a pair of hogshead casks which were filled in 2009. Bottled by Càrn Mòr for their Strictly Limited range, this had an outturn of 815 bottles.

Nose: baking spices, fresh warm pastries, hint of Bakewell tart, caramel sauce, freshly cut spring grass
Palate: sweet caramel sauce, madeira cake, orange juice, hint of cranberry and black pepper, milk chocolate
Finish: more spice and caramel sweetness orange oil

There is no denying that this whisky beckons you in. A rich honey colour, with oily legs, makes it incredibly inviting in the glass. With a great nose and palate to follow through!

Rating: 5 out of 5.

This is a very fragrant dram with plenty on the palate all accentuated by a good mouth feel. The baking spices and sweeter notes balance each other perfectly, the addition of freshly cut grass is always welcome in any whisky. A special dram – one that we think would be perfectly suited for a summer Beach BBQ.
